Celebrate National Library Card Sign-up Month in September!

September is Library Card Sign-up Month, a time when the American Library Association (ALA) and libraries nationwide join together to remind parents, caregivers and students that signing up for a library card is the first step towards academic achievement and lifelong learning.

Do your family members all have library cards?  It’s the perfect time to come to the West Bend Community Memorial Library and visit the Circulation Desk, get to know the library better and sign-up for a library card.

What do you need, you may ask?  Well, to sign-up for a library card an adult needs to have a picture ID with their current address.  If your picture ID does not have your current address, please bring a document showing your current address such as a lease agreement or a utility bill.  For minor children under the age of 18, parents may sign up their child for a library card with their above information.  There is a form to fill out when you come to the desk as well.  The Circulation Staff will be happy to process your information and get your card the very same day!

Your new library card give you access not only to all the tangible resources in the library, such as books, DVDs, music CDs, playaways, and books on CD.  Your card also gives you access to our 12 internet stations for a minimum of 60 minutes per day.  Don’t see a title you want at the West Bend library?  Well, maybe another library in our system has it!  You can place holds via the online catalog or talk to a librarian at either the children’s desk on the main floor or the reference desk on the second floor and they can discuss options to get the resources you need.

The West Bend Community Memorial Library card also gives you access to OverDrive (e-books and e-audiobooks), Gale Courses (online classes), RBDigital (e-magazines and e-audiobooks), BadgerLink, A to Z Databases, Pronunciator (learn a new language), Small Engine Repair, and so much more!  Visit the Online Resources page of our website to learn more about the online resources available with your West Bend Community Memorial Library card.  Or come to the library and chat with a librarian to discover more!

Showing your library card gets you access to great things all year-round, but during Library Card Sign-up Month it will also get you the chance to win $100.  Help us spread the word about the value of libraries this September by snapping a picture with your library card and posting it to Instagram or Twitter with the hashtag #GetLibraryCarded.  You'll be automatically entered in a drawing to win a $100 Visa gift card! Click here for the official rules of this nation-wide contest. The promotion begins Sunday, September 1 at noon CT and ends Sunday, September 22 at noon CT. Librarians and library lovers are encouraged to participate.

You can’t go wrong with a library card…it’s the smartest card in your wallet!  And your first one is free! (Replacements cards are only $2.00 if you lost yours).

Let your adventure begin!

Since 1987, Library Card Sign-up Month has been held each September to mark the beginning of the school year. During the month, the ALA and libraries unite in a national effort to ensure every child signs up for their own library card. Learn more about Library Card Sign-up Month here.
